The TrueTell: A Revolutionary Way For Business Leaders To Talk Their Talk. And Mean It.

The TrueTell

Over the past 20 years, I have had the great fortune of being a voiceover actor in Hollywood – voicing hundreds of commercials, television promos, movie trailers, documentaries, and animated characters.  In that world, it’s been a belief by many that successful male voice actors generally push their voices into a lower register in order to sound deeper, more powerful and more masculine.  I was no different. In fact, using that “put on” voice (as I call it now) made me a lot of money.

But, after years of misuse and vocal strain, my dream job had turned into a nightmare.  My “money voice” physically gave out.  And with it, my confidence, career and identity.

It wasn’t easy recovering from that dark period in my life.  After years of vocal therapy and retraining my voice to be used correctly – to what I now refer to as my ‘authentic’ voice – I redirected my passion and became a voice coach.  I wanted to teach other voice actors what I had learned the hard way.  Namely:

1. To stop doing what I did (use a “put on voice”) in pushing it to where it doesn’t want to naturally go.

2. And to access and embrace that authentic part of themselves. Only then would their voice follow in all its natural power.

In other words in order to sound authentic, they needed to be authentic. The “sounds” of those results with my clients were absolutely transformational and their careers soared.

I branded my revolutionary method into what I call The TrueTell®.

At the same time, I also noticed that it was not only actors whose inauthentic voices and sounds were leading them to a career crisis but also people from every walk of life and profession.

So I started looking at business leaders, innovators and the entrepreneurs who are the leaders of tomorrow.  What I noticed about these achievers is that they experience their vocal inauthenticity not by simply “putting on” a voice but, rather, by losing their credibility.   That’s because when human beings hear an inauthentic voice, we instinctively feel the speaker is not to be trusted.

Living in this digital age of instant communication and criticism, leaders are under constant observation and scrutiny for not only

  • what they say but

  • how they sound when they say it.   And that sound is directly linked to

  • how they feel about what they are saying.

I’m sure you can all relate to a time when you’ve been totally connected to a topic that empowers you when you talk about it.  And there are those other times, I’m sure, when you’ve been challenged by a topic that you were uncomfortable to discuss.

Whether you know it or not, your feelings about those topics directly affected the sound of your voice when you spoke and, ultimately, affected how your audience – whether your peers, stakeholders, employees, vendors or media – received those messages and responded to them.

Remember, you can be the most significant person in the world but if there is a disconnect between

  • what you say,

  • how you feel about what you say and

  • how you sound when you say it,

your message will be heard as weak and untrustworthy.

In corporate cultures riddled with distrust, upheaval and instability, your teams need you to, instead, create, instill and live in an environment of honesty, empowerment and growth. As a leader, your voice needs to communicate credibility, influence and responsibility in upholding the values and mission of your company.
